Dondra Head Lighthouse is a lighthouse located on Dondra Head near the southernmost point in Sri Lanka and is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka and also one of the tallest in South East Asia.

The lighthouse is near the village of Dondra, and is approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) southeast of Matara. The name Dondra is a synonym for "Devi-Nuwara" in the local Sinhala language, "Devi" meaning "Gods" and "Nuwara" meaning "City". Dondra is therefore derived to mean "City of the Gods".

Dondra Head lighthouse is operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. It was designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglass, with construction, by William Douglass of the Imperial Lighthouse Service, commencing in November 1887. All the building materials including the bricks and steel were imported from England. The granite rock was supplied from quarries at Dalbeattie in Scotland and Penryn in Cornwall. The lighthouse was completed and commissioned in March 1890. The combined cost of erection of the lighthouse and the Barberyn Lighthouse was £30,000 and was paid for by dues collected at the Basses lighthouses.

The lighthouse is 49 m (161 ft) high and contains 7 floors, 14 two panel yellow colour windows and 196 steps to the top.

Dondra Head is also one of four international lighthouse in Sri Lanka. It was modernised in 2000, with the introduction of a Differential Global Positioning System and is computer linked to the other major lighthouses around the coast.

Matara Fort

The Matara Fort was built in the year 1560 by the Portuguese. However historically, it is stated that the fort was built by the Dutch as they captured the city of Galle. Matara fort has become one of the best destinations for spending holidays in Sri Lanka. It is very famous and has a number of well established hotels, guest houses, entertainment facilities, etc. that people can enjoy.

The Matara city is really enjoyed much by the romantic couples and honeymoon travelers as it presents a nice touch to the romantic side of humans. The beaches, beautiful resorts and entertainments like fishing, surfing, whale watching, etc. all contribute to the beauty of this place.

There is also a spectacular view of the river Nilwala that is liked and appreciated by these people who tour the area. This locality of Matara is on the land tongue that is precisely placed between the green lagoon and the ocean. The fort is protected on its part or section of landside with 13 meters of thicker walls that is also about 5 meters tall in height. The Matara Fort is not protected from all other 3 locations other than the presence of water on all of these 3 sides. This water aspect on 3 sides also provides a natural barrier to its fort. The thickness of these sides also is very much impressive as the person can stand on top of it and view the scenes around.

Behind these walls are the empty fields that were having so much plantations and greenery in the older times when the Dutch time was around. Most of these have vanished now and children predominantly play sports like Cricket there which is also enjoyed and played by many tourists coming to view the fort. There is also a very nice church that is located on the other side of this Matara Fort. There is a beautiful and well established guest house on its left hand side as it is also the seaside of Matara Fort. The presence of villas nearby and other beautiful resorts attracts tourists and travelers so regularly to the area and, nearby beaches are also very nice attraction. The maps and travel guides mostly contain some description of the Matara fort due to its grand architecture and historic importance too. Therefore, the people can enjoy and have a great learning time as many opportunities are available with the views of Matara Fort.

Polhena Beach, Matara.

Matara is a place in Sri Lanka as it is precisely situated in the Southern area of the city of Colombo. The sea view of the city is spectacular and it is beautifully presented with the glamorous look. Weherahena Temple

Matara is a beautiful place in the country of Sri Lanka that is situated at a serene and calm location. There are overall not relics or artifacts of the historic importance or significance of this temple.

Devinuwara (Dondra) Temple

Dondra (also known as Devinuwara) is also known as the City of God. This religiously relevant and established city is located about four miles away from the main city of Matara, Sri Lanka. It is however situated on a small peninsula that is interspersed amongst a lot of architectural artifacts that comprise of the huts, plantations for coconut, various huts and pillars.

These pillars are made of stone and stand in an upright position to increase the grandeur of Dondra. There is however a great and magnificent temple that is known as the Temple of Vishnu. It is also the only Vishnu temple that is in the area of Dondra.

Due to this it is very famous and popular amongst the community of Vishnu preachers. This temple also leads to a wide and broad road that contains many styles and abundance of the coconut trees. This road then leads to a plain road that leads to the group of these stone pillars that are standing straight and also are near to the sea shore. However there is a single stone pillar in the middle of it which attracts attention of the tourists. It is situated precisely at the low rocky point which serves as a way of breaking the sea waves that are amidst the stones shaped in hewn form. There are also many other tourist attractions in the temple, as the statues and pictures engraved all help an individual gather maximum of information about Vishnu. The reason why the temple is also so frequently visited even by the Sri Lankans is that, there are many hotels and tourist destinations that the people can enjoy along with the presence of this magnificent holy place in Dondra.

Moreover, there is also an inscription that is cut in the language of Singhalese and using its characters to convey the meanings. This temple is relatively popular as it is also informed about in the guides and books that are always there to be taken advantage of.
