Matara is a beautiful place in the southern part of Sri lanka and it is considered as a well known and visited place by tourists coming so regularly to Sri Lanka. The city is also gifted with a beautiful seaside view and attracts many visitors and honeymoon couples coming to Sri Lanka.

The travel guides and many other travel websites rank Matara so highly in the Sri Lankan holiday destinations. The number of people coming on tours is continuously increasing in the city and it is a place with many exquisite beaches that can be viewed mainly on maps of the region.

The facilities in the area are so good and comprises of many tourist attractions as the hotels, guest houses, etc. are all so well structured and provide excellent facilities to all visitors.

The star fort is located in the city of Matara and it is also named as the Star Fort because of its shape in the star format. The fort has its historical and ethnic importance too and it was used historically in wars when it served to protect and secure the other main fort in the city of Matara. There are many historic and other aspects attached to the fort.

Many travelers and history students take specific interest in the star fort and examine the ways in which it was anciently used for protecting the other main fort in Matara. There are also two tiny houses preserved in a much better way as there has been limited wear and tear on these. But these tiny houses get closed on the Sunday holiday and also when the evening approaches because of their importance and preserving purpose. There are also other prisoner cells and jails that were built in place so that the war prisoners can be kept there and these cells were also built with so much intelligence to keep the prisoners as bait for the enemies. The food passing mechanism was also very good in Prison as it was built separately to fully protect the jail authorities from any mishaps. It was mainly built in the year 1940 and considered among very good war forts as it was architecturally built with British or Dutch building styles. This historic location has many nearby other tourist attractions also which makes it a worth watching and visiting place in Matara, Sri Lanka. The facilities and tourist guides are good and provide good information.

It is located after Matara and Dikwella town in the Southern Province and at small fishing village called Kudawella 1.1 kilometres (0.7 mi) to the right. Dikwella is a coastal town 180 kilometres (111.8 mi) far away from Colombo and 22 kilometres (13.7 mi) from Matara

There is a rock with a long but narrow fracture in the middle, At once rough sea waves gush through the crack and pass out through the hole at the bottom of the rock and blow out high in to the sky displaying a marvel water fountain.

Surrounding area is always filled with whoosh caused by seawater rushing through the natural hole and it can be heard somewhat far away from the site.

Occasionally the blowhole shoots water several feet above the rock. If sea is rough with strong winds and waves gush fast, the height of the water blow-up goes up 25 metres (82.0 ft) to 30 metres (98.4 ft).[3] [4] but when sea is calm and quiet the situation will be reversed as shown in the photograph.

This site has now been developed as a tourist attraction. A visitors' information center on marine life and a viewing flat-form have already been built up.

There are sandy beaches which are quite long in area and have a charm of its own as it is protected by the sandbars, reefs, and the headlands. The area therefore is also made safer for swimming purposes. Dickwella is also famous for its large Buddha statue that is considered as the largest sitting statue in Sri Lanka which is about 50 meters tall in size.

The Hummanya is also known as “blow hole” in the region of Sri Lanka and it is considered as the second largest in the league of blow holes, but Sri Lanka’s one and only. In essence it means a distance where the sound of “hoo” can easily be listened or heard by a person. It is a well known attraction for the travelers and tourists visiting the area and is well known for its uniqueness and excitement aspect. It is located in the deeper southern region of the country and it certainly has its charming aspect that thrills many and attracts people from all across Sri Lanka.

These factors all play an active role as much as the other factors like beautiful beaches and tourists locations are well known not only on the maps but also in travel guides too. Tourism gets increased due to the blow hole attracting many tourists from all across the globe due to its exciting aspects. The nearby areas are also good holiday destinations and one has to pass through the towns of Matara and Dickwella to get to the Blow Hole. Interestingly the people who go there on their own vehicles get good care facilities there and normal residents take care of these vehicles only for a nominal fee. There is a visitors’ information center built to help the visitors get better knowledge and idea on what they are experiencing and how it is significant.

Our third day at Tangalla started as normal on the beach, us laying flat out relaxing, reading and listening to music. All of a sudden a man came running shouting “Come and see, come and see!!! Hurry!!“. First we just thought he was a seller selling fruits or souvenirs, so we pretended to be asleep. But the man kept on shouting,  so we stood up and followed him a few meter along the beach, and we are so glad we did!

It turned out that during the night a sea turtle had wandered up at the beach to lay her eggs, but had taken the wrong way back and ended up in the freshwater laguna in stead of the sea! Poor sea turtle.

The men had been struggling for hours to get the sea turtle up from the fresh water, and on to the beach. The sea turtle would have died if the men had not gotten it out of the fresh water. Sea turtles are among the earths endangered spices, and are one of earth`s most ancient creatures, being on our planet for around 110 million years, since the time of the dinosaurs.

It was a long way for the sea turtle to walk!

Sea turtles colour varies between yelling, black and greenish, depending on the species. There are seven species of sea turtles, and this is most likely a olive ridley sea turtle. Unlike other turtles, the sea turtles can not retract their legs and head into their shells. The shell is streamlined which makes it perfect for swimming through the water, but not so much for wading through the sand.

The sea turtles spend most of their lives in the sea, so walking on the beach is not easy for them. It was also a very hot day, 30 °C, and the sand was really warm, too warm for us to walk barefoot.

The sea turtle was really struggling in the hot sand, and was stopping all the time looking tired. They have strong legs though, as they undergo long swimming migrations, some as far as 1400 miles, between their feeding grounds and the beaches where they nest.

To cool the sea turtle the local men carried water from the sea, and poured over her.

The sea turtle looked really happy getting water over her shell and head. Even though turtles can stay out of water for a long time, they can also stay under water for a long time, the green sea turtles for as long as five hours! The usual length of a feeding dive is five minutes or less though. An amazing fact: their heart rate slows to conserve oxygen – nine minutes may elapse between heartbeats! Wow!

After each water break, the sea turtle regained more energy and started dragging herself over the hot sand again.

After each water break, the sea turtle regained more energy and started dragging herself over the hot sand again.

And finally, the sea turtle reached the sea!

She looks so happy and relieved to have reached the sea.

She immediately started swimming.

Bye bye beautiful sea turtle! Have a nice life out in the sea where you belong!

Happy ending! We were lucky to be at the right place at the right time that day, and able to be a part of this rescue mission. The sea turtles rarely come up onto the beach during day light, so getting good pictures and videos are very rare. We were very fortunate to even see a sea turtle at all!

At the neighbouring beach to Tangalla; Rekawa Beach, it is apparently possible to go turtle-watching, but you have to pay 1000 Rs to be allowed to enter the beach! And even then you are not guaranteed to even see a turtle. PS! In Lonely Planet there is an error, saying that April to September is the best time to see the turtles, but that is wrong. The mating season for sea turtles in Sri Lanka is February – October.
